If you are going really low budget for your trip to Cameron Highlands, then you might consider taking up your accommodation at Fathers Guest House. It is located on a private hill on the same road leading to Heritage Hotel and Greenhill Apartments in Tanah Rata. It consists of 3 bungalow accommodation houses on 5 acres of private land surrounded by forest and gardens overlooking the town of Tanah Rata.
This accommodation is very suitable for backpackers and people who would want to keep their accommodation as low cost as possible. Unlike the other low budget accommodation, this one is sitting on top of a hill. You will have a nice surrounding view of the jungle, and it has a very nice garden in its compound. There is also a small vegetable patch alongside its driveway, though whether it belongs to some other people or the owners of Fathers Guest House I didn't bother to check. But with its greenery it was very soothing to the eyes.
As you walk up the driveway, you can see the Heritage hotel taking up a large section on the opposite hill with its Tudor style buildings. Quite a bit of contrast when you look at Father's Guest House bungalow when you arrive at its entrance.
What strikes me odd is the barracks style tin can dormitory accommodation. I heard from people who had stayed there that it was very cold. Since it is made up of metal which provide poor heat insulation, it does not afford you much warmth during the night as the heat in the room easily radiates away into the cold night air. But it is very cheap! From the info that I gathered, it cost about RM8-RM10 per bed. Very affordable indeed, especially for a backpacking guest.
If dormitory style accommodation does not appeal to you, they have single and double rooms ranging from RM16 to RM98 depending on whether you take the single rooms, double rooms with shared or attached bathroom.
The rooms aren't too shabby, though simple, it is clean, cozy and comfortable. But do check further whether the bathroom provides hot showers, it would be teeth chattering to have a cold shower in Cameron Highlands.
Fathers Guest House has quite a fair bit of amenities provided, a big lounge area with a big home theater system plug in to Astro cable TV. They have internet and email services in case you want to contact your family and friends back home and perhaps blog about what you are up to in the highlands. They have a washing and drying area for your soiled clothes. Plus they have nice open air dining area which they call it their "Secret Garden Café".
You can also book many country side tours as well as jungle trekking mossy forest walks conducted by guides as well as 4 x 4 outdoor adventure tours. Using 4WD range rovers.
